Nongovernmental credit in Romania slips 0.3% m/m in January, to lei 199.28bn

The value of credits granted to people and companies lowered 0.3 percent in January on the previous month, to 199.28 billion lei, and 3.5 percent compared to the same month last year, versus a 0.9 percent inch in December, according to data of the central lender BNR.
The nongovernmental credit reported significant annual increases before the financial crisis, of up to 70 percent.
Lei credits added 0.7 percent in January over the previous month, to 80.27 billion lei, but declined 4.2 percent on January last year.
The volume of lei loans granted to the population continued to decrease, by 0.7 percent versus December 2009 to 38.52 million lei and by 5.1 percent over January last year. For companies, these added 2.1 percent month-on-month to 41.75 billion lei, but fell 3.3 percent year-on-year.
The foreign currency loans expressed in lei lowered 1 percent last month versus December, to 119 billion lei. In euros, the foreign currency loans inched 0.7 percent.
The governmental credit rose 5.9 percent in January to 49.57 billion lei and remains 127.1 percent above the level reported at the end of January 2009.
