Romanians' back payments to credits grow 14.7% in January, to lei 3.26bn

Arrears larger than 30 days for Romanians' credits rose strongly in the first month of the year, by 14.7 percent from the previous, the monthly growing rate being three times higher compared to December 2009, according to data published by the central lender BNR.
Romanians' arrears larger than 30 days hiked from 2.84 billion lei in December last year to 3.26 billion lei in January. Compared to January 2009, arrears grew 2.9 times.
The largest arrears were on the lei credits segment, of 1.97 billion lei, 8.1 percent up from the level reported in December.
Back payments in the single European currency totaled 1.02 billion lei, 17.8 percent higher than at the end of last year, while those granted in U.S. dollars amounted to only 11.3 million lei.
The highest increase of arrears was recorded by the credits granted in 'other currencies', mostly in Swiss francs, which boosted 86.7 percent in January, to 250.08 million lei.
As many as 691,207 Romanians were behind schedule with credit payments in January, 7,900 more than at the end of December 2009.
