Foreigners inject EUR 384m in Romania's insurance companies in 2009, data show

Romanian insurance companies received last year capital injections of more than 384 million euros from the foreign shareholders, 60 percent up versus 2008, when these amounted to 241 million euros, data of the Trade Registry Office (ONRC) show.
The highest capital injection last year was given to Groupama Asigurari (238.5 million euros). Uniqa Asigurari received 41.7 million euros to hike its share capital, while Certasig sponged 2.38 million euros to increase the capital in October and another 16.83 million euros in November last year.
KD Life, Eureko Asigurari, Alico Asigurari, OTP Garancia Asigurari and Aviva Asigurari de Viata also got capital infusions from the foreign shareholders.
Insurers' representatives declared recently that the companies need additional capital infusions to face the significant losses reported because of the financial crisis.
In 2009, the companies activating on the local financial market sponged capital injections of 814 million euros from the foreign shareholders, 46 percent up from 2008, when these amounted 558 million euros, according to ONRC.
