Key rate - BNR continues to relax gradually the monetary policy, cuts the benchmark rate to 6.5%
NewsIn - 29 Martie 2010
The board of Romania's Central Bank (BNR) decided to slash the key interest rate by half percentage point for the third time this year, to 6.5 percent, the minimum level since the current monetary policy was adopted, in line with analysts' expectations.
The central lender reduced the benchmark rate from 8 to 7.5 percent in January and to 7 percent in February.
The analysts expected such a decision although some of them foresaw a smaller cut, of only 0.25 percentage points, as the economy still shows signs of weakness and the inflation level is not alarming.
BNR maintained the minimum mandatory reserves at the current levels, of 15 percent for the lei passives and of 25 percent for those in foreign currency, and mentioned it will continue to manage properly the liquidity in the banking system.
