Romanian exports outgrow imports Jan.-Feb. 2010
Agerpres - 9 Aprilie 2010
Romanian exports advanced 18.5 percent in the first two months of 2010 when stated in the local currency, the leu (RON), and 21.8 percent when stated in euro, while imports grew only 3.4 percent when stated in RON and 6.2 percent when stated in euro, according to data released on Friday by the National statistics Institute (INS).
The estimates released by the INS of the developments in Romania's foreign trade in February 2010 shows, on the one hand, a recovery of exports, especially when compared with the February 2009 figures, and also exports overgrowing imports, which has brought about a narrowing of the foreign payment deficit and the current-account deficit.
Romania's FOB-CIF trade deficit stood at RON 2.444 billion (593.4 million euros), down RON 1.264 billion (270.6 million euros) from February 2009.
FOB exports January 1 - February 28, 2010, according to data with the INS, reached RON 20.198 billion (4.883 billion euros), while CIF imports totaled RON 24.453 billion (5.910 billion euros).
The FOB-CIF trade deficit January-February 2010 was RON 4.255 billion (1.027 billion euros), RON 2.340 billion (529.6 million euros) less than in January 1 - February 28, 2009.
Intra-community trade conducted by Romania January 1 - February 28, 2010 stood at RON 15.176 billion (3.676 billion euros) in terms of deliveries and at RON 17.330 billion (4.198 billion euros) in terms of imports, making up 75.1 percent of Romania's total exports and 70.9 percent of Romania' total imports.
INS explains that the difference between the dynamic computed against the values stated in RON and the dynamic against the euro-values was the result of the local currency having appreciated against the European single currency in January-February 2010 by between 2.2 and 3.9 percent.
In the makeup of the imports and exports, important weights were held by transport equipment and machinery (42.9 percent of exports and 34.5 percent of imports) and other processed products of iron, steel, rubber and metals, including clothing, footwear and accessories (35.4 percent of exports and 30.1 percent of imports).
