Romania should be interested in Rosia Montana
ACTMedia - 23 Aprilie 2010
Romania is at a moment when it should be interested in Rosia Montana project, said Tudor Serban, the secretary of state in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business Environment, who considers that the problem of this project is the lack of visibility.
It is a capitalization solution, money coming from foreign investors, said Serban at a conference on modern mining in Romania. He pointed out that he had not had any meetings with representatives of Rosia Montana Gold Corporation since he had been appointed secretary of state in the Ministry.
In his turn, the president of the National Agency for Mineral Resources, Alexandru Patruti declared that stopping works at Rosia Montana could not be a good thing for Romania, when he answered questions about the intention of the Ministry of Culture to include Rosia Montana in the UNESCO patrimony.
'Stopping works there could not be a good thing because the mineral resources are the property of the Romanian state and should be exploited sooner or later. The state is the one to leave for concession the exploitation activity of any mineral resources in Romania. Certainly when the demand grows resources will be exploited,' Patruti said.
Csilla Hegedus, the personal councilor of the minister of culture Kelemen Hunor declared on 18 February that the Minister of Culture and the National Patrimony wanted Rosia Montana to be included in the world UNESCO patrimony.'The Ministry of Culture is analyzing now the inclusion of Rosia Montana on Romania's list. The ways of including it in the world patrimony is now analysed by ministry specialists. We will make a decision this year,' said Csilla Hegedus.
Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC), the company interested in exploiting minieral resources in the area, was set up in 1997 in Alba county. Until now the Canadian company Gabriel Resources, the majority shareholder of RMGC has invested din Romania over 400 million dollars to develop the mining project Rosia Montana, according to the company. Rosia Montana commune in Alba county has the biggest gold reserve in Europe.
Hungary says No to Rosia Montana project
The Hungarian ambassador to Bucharest, Fuzes Oszkar declared on Thursday during a visit to Alba county that Hungary was against the mining project Rosia Montana because it does not trust the technology used. 'We do not trust this technology and the decision is a thing of responsibility for the government of Romania. We have just an opinion and we fear possible risks and dangers, which are represented, in our opinion by the project for both Romania and Hungary,' Fuzes said.
The ambassador said he was on a visit to Alba county to go to Rosia Montana and get informed about the mining project, to learn the people's opinions and the risks for nature and the cultural patrimony.
Asked about Hungary's present stand about the project, the Hungarian ambassador said Hungary was against the mining project. He added that he was going for the first time to Rosia Montana and intended to talk both with people who are in favour and against the project.
Asked whether Hungary could change its stand about the project, Fuzes said his country was ready to get information from specialists and wanted to know the opinions of people involved, but for the moment Hungary's stand was No.Asked whether in case Romanian authorities approved the project Hungary would still be against, the neighbour country would use EU levers to intervene in the matter, the ambassador said the two countries had a close collaboration.Hungary asked Romanian authorities many times to inform it about the project as the extraction process would use cyanides and the possible effects of an ecological accident would be felt in the neighbour country too.
