EC: Most telecommunications services in Romanian were expanded in 2009
Agentia Nationala de Presa - Agerpres - 26 Mai 2010
gerpres correspondent Tudor Martalogu reports: The 15th Report of the European Commission (EC) on the telecommunications market in the European Union (EU), entitled 'Telecommunications - Citizens and European Companies Pay for Inconsistent Application of EU Rules,' showed that most telecommunications services expanded in Romania in 2009, although the pace is quite low.
Thus, the EC Report reveals that the penetration rate of mobile telephony services has continued to increase, reaching 115 percent in October last year. At the same time, the penetration rate of broadband mobile services reached 2.2 percent.
However, as regards the fixed broadband and telephony services, Romania is still lagging behind other member states, with its penetration rates reaching 13 percent and 24 percent respectively. In this regard, the Report reminded that the Romanian government prepared a strategy for 2009-2015 to expand them.
The document also mentions that one of the main problems in the telecommunications sector in Romania is the independence of the regulatory authority, which does not benefit of a stable legal framework yet, with some regulatory activities not being completely separate from attributions related to property yet.
The EC Report also showed that markets in most EU member states have become more competitive in 2009, while still remaining at a national scale. In addition, there are substantial differences in terms of competitiveness between various member countries.
The Report mentioned that the EU telecommunications market registered a zero growth in 2009 compared with the general decline of the European economy by 4.2 percent last year against 2008.
