EIB might lend Romania 1.5 billion euros for viable projects
ACTMedia - 26 Mai 2010
The European Investment Bank (EIB) might lend 1-1.5 billion euros to Romania, provided that the Romanian Government comes up with sustainable investment projects, EIB Director Milena Messori told a Central and South-East European Financial Forum in Bucharest on Tuesday.
She added that Romania needs a lot of investment and the country should capitalise on European funds. It is less about what the National Bank of Romania can do, and more about what the Government can do to use its resources, she said. The EIB intends to grant loans to Romania of 1-1.5 billion euros, only if it is presented viable projects. The amount, said Messori, is available; the only problem is the identification of fundable projects.
The EIB official also mentioned that the measures the central banks could take in a time of crisis might include cutting the mandatory reserves.
According to Agerpres, the 7h edition of the Central and South-East European Financial Forum started Tuesday in Bucharest. The two-day event is organised by Forum Invest in cooperation with the National Bank of Romania. This edition's special guest is Nouriel Roubini, the economist who predicted the impact of the ongoing financial crisis on the world's economies, who on Wednesday will join the forum, alongside BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu as the keynote speaker.
