Romania will not liberalize gas prices before crisis ends (negative)
Raiffeisen Capital&Investment - 26 Mai 2010
Romanian president Traian Basescu said yesterday that Romanian domestic gas prices will remain regulated at least until the current economic crisis is over, in order to protect Romanian citizens from too high prices which an immediate full liberalization would entail.
Initially, Romania should have aligned domestic gas prices until January 1 2008, but obtained several suspensions from the EU. Meanwhile, there is no clear deadline for the full price liberalization.
Several companies would profit from the liberalization of the gas price in Romania, among them most prominently Petrom and Romgaz. Just last week, the CFO of Petrom's core shareholder OMV, David Davies, said that an immediate full gas price liberalization would improve Petrom's EBIT by as much as EUR 500 mn. In this respect, we expect a negative market reaction for Petrom as a consequence to Basescu's statements.
