Overdue payments in foreign currency increase twice as fast as ones in national currency

Although the percentage of overdue loans in foreign currency is lower than the one of the delays in lei payments, namely 4.6 percent compared to 7 percent, the overdue payments in foreign currency are accruing much more rapidly, reads Financiarul daily .
According to the National Bank of Romania (BNR) data, while the delays in lei payments went up in April 2010 compared to March 2010 by 240 million lei, the foreign currency ones were up by an amount equivalent to 450 million lei. Moreover, in the first four months of 2010, the overdue payments in foreign currency went up 1.93 billion lei.
The loans with payment delays of at least one day reached 11.1 billion lei at the end of April, 690 million lei higher than the level recorded in March, ie 10.41 billion lei. Likewise, April is the third month when an upward dynamics of overdue payments is recorded, considering that the advance recorded in February amounted to 580 million lei, and in March, 620 million lei. The highest growth pace of the payment delays was registered in January compared to December 2009, ie 1.17 billion lei.
Under these circumstances, the percentage of overdue payments in the total amount of loans granted by banks both to individuals and to companies went up to 5.5 percent of the total non-governmental loan, compared to 4.72 percent in March.
