Petrom starts-up PMB production
Raiffeisen Capital&Investment - 25 Iunie 2010
Petrom started manufacturing polymer-modified bitumen (PMB), used to make asphalt, at a unit near Bucharest, the company said yesterday.
Petrom's marketing unit targets annual bitumen sales of about 25k tons this year in Romania and Bulgaria, according to the statement.Up until now, the only refinery able to produce PMB was Rompetrol's Midia refinery near Constanta. PMB is predominantly used for the construction of motorways, because it reduces the danger of aquaplaning and noise ('Flüsterasfalt'). PMB sells at a much better margin than ordinary bitumen and will find broad usage in the region's various motorway construction projects. Finally, the durability of PMB is half than that of ordinary bitumen, increasing long-term demand for the product. We therefore expect a favourable impact of the move on Petrom's refining results and thus see the news positive.
