Exporters urge BNR to intervene to stop leu depreciation
ACTMedia - 1 Iulie 2010
The National Association of Exporters and Importers of Romania (ANEIR) is urging Romania's National Bank to intervene to stop leu depreciation, considering that even though in theory it represents an advantage for exporters, it would lead to major losses with leu's stabilization and appreciation.
'Keeping up the monetary policy rate level by BNR represents a policy of stability. It is a sign of continuity, of stability, it is a good move that BNR does not yield to emotional pressures. We hope it will continue to maintain its interventionist policy on foreign exchange, so that leu will not further depreciate', Secretary general of ANEIR Mihai Ionescu said on Wednesday. As well, he stressed that leu depreciation is temporary.
'Leu depreciation is a momentarily one, which has an emotional factor, but also an objective one. We, exporters, should be happy, but it is not so because such enthusiasm was also created in the past and exporters signed contracts for certain prices only to see when they had to cash the money the exchange rate changing evolution. As such, we lost 7,000 companies during the crisis', added Mihai Ionescu.BNR Board has decided on Wednesday to keep its benchmark interest rate at 6.25 percent per annum.
