Official talks on a more comprehensive Romanian-US Strategic Partnership

During a working visit to the United States, Chairman of the Romanian Senate Mircea Geoana discussed with US Congress officials the need for a more comprehensive Romanian-US Strategic Partnership.
According to a release , this topic was addressed during a meeting on Wednesday between Geoana and senators Richard Lugar, a ranking member on the US Foreign Relations Committee, John McCain, a ranking member on the US Senate Armed Services Committee and Jeanne Shaheen, chairwoman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
'Besides the spectacular developments in the Romanian-US relations in the military and strategic fields over the last 15-20 years, the financial and economic crisis compels us to increase and diversify investments in infrastructure, energy and IT&C, trade, as well as scientific collaboration between universities and joint access to third markets,' said Geoana during the meeting, according to the release.
Geoana also raised the issue of including the Romanian nationals under the Visa Waiver Program, which would allow them to enter the United States without a visa and stay on the US soil for a period of up to 90 days.
During the meeting with the Congress officials the importance of a new approach of stabilisation and development in the Euro-Asian region stretching from the Black Sea to Central Asia, the EU engagement in the region with US support and the energy importance of project Nabucco were singled out. Another topic on the agenda was the strategic importance of the Republic of Moldova and supporting this state on its European course.
