Over 70,000 Romanians find a job abroad in 2010
ACTMedia - 9 August 2010
Some 51 percent of Romanians believe that chances to find a job abroad are higher than at home, reads the daily Financiarul which mentions that since January and until now 426,443 Romanians have applied for jobs abroad and 72,462 people have already taken the new job.
Most of them signed a contract in Germany and, surprisingly, in Greece, while constructions and health were the fields where workforce migration was highest .
The average competition for a job outside the country is 5.85 people, while in some cases over 250 people compete for the same position, according to Web site Tjobs.ro statistics. The 72,462 Romanians who signed a contract for a job abroad this year earn 97.82 million euros monthly, the average combined salary amounting to 1,350 euros a month.
The Eurobarometer poll data points to unemployment as one of the key factors in the decision to move to another country: 48 percent would consider working abroad if faced with unemployment. Now, 2.3 percent of the EU citizens live in another member state than theirs.
In Romania's case, 51 percent of the polled say that they would have bigger chances to find work in another country, while 28 percent say that they know a relative or a friend who worked abroad. Though more and more Romanians are leaving to work outside the country, forced by the increasingly difficult economic situation, by the high unemployment rate and by the austerity measures, 34 percent of them would not take this step.
Other data published by Eurobarometer also proves this. Few Romanians say that they would leave for career development opportunities, only 13 percent compared to 36 percent of the Swedes or 32 percent of the French people. Some 37 percent of Romanians would leave for a higher living standard and 32 percent for better working conditions, while the things that discourage them are changes that would be too large to subject their children to (26 percent) and the hostile attitude of other countries towards foreigners (18 percent), the Eurobarometer poll also indicates.
Of the over 72,000 who also signed a contract, 14.6 left for Germany (10,636 people) and another 9.5 percent (6,898 people) signed a contract in Greece, even though this country is passing through a very tough economic crisis. Some 7.9 percent (5,772 people) went to Cyprus, 6.9 percent to Britain and 6.4 percent (4,680 people) to Italy. Even though Spain has one of the highest unemployment rates, approximately 20 percent according to the latest data published by Eurostat, since the beginning of the year 3,296 Romanians have found a job there, which represents 4.5 percent of the ones who left to work abroad.
Since the beginning of the year, the majority of Romanians have gone to work in constructions (10,572 people, i.e. 14.5 percent of all the ones who left), 11.1 percent (8,102 people) - in the medical and health care field and also 11 percent (8,052 people) now work in restaurants. Some 6,277 people left for a job in industry, 6,163 people - in engineering, 4,145 people - in hotels and tourism and 3,067 people - in IT.
In 2009, the Romanians who work abroad sent home 3.026 billion euros, which accounts for only 2.6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The total amount dropped by 2.13 billion euros (41.31 percent) compared to the prior year when they sent home 5.156 billion euros, a sum equal to 3.76 percent of the GDP.
