Analysts say date of adopting euro is possible as of 2017 or 2020
ACTMedia - 25 August 2010
The adoption of the European currency may be delayed by at least two years from the formal deadline established now for 1 January 2015, although Romania might enter the euro zone after 2020, the main cause being the delay of reforms which should prepare the real economy for the change, analysts say.
'Considering the present development level and the structural reforms which the economy should undergo, a credible target could be after 2020. Thus we may have talks to postpone it as we get closer to the new target. The important aspect remains that the intention to adopt euro should be preserved and strengthened even if the adoption year is delayed,' says Nicolaie Chidesciuc, senior economist at ING
Bank. BNR governor Mugur Isarescu recently declared that the program of adopting euro, including the established target should be re-discussed in the context of economic evolution. Isarescu drew the attention several times that the adoption of euro before adjusting economy and before Romanian firms became competitive in foreign market is not to be desired.
