Labor force occupancy rate in Romania - below European average by 6%
ACTMedia - 23 Septembrie 2010
Labor force occupancy rate in Romania saw an almost 6 percent decline between 1998 and 2009, whereas at the European level the average rate was on the rise in the same interval, by more than 3 percent, reveals a study published by Euractiv.
In the past ten years, the occupancy rate in Romania followed a downward trend, from 64.2 percent in 1998 to 58.6 percent at the end of 2009, while in Europe it grew over the same period from 61.2 percent to 64.6 percent.
The Euroactiv study uses as reference the percentage target of labor force absorption reported to the entire active population, established by the European Union officials at 75 percent in 2020.
According to Euractiv, Romania lost in the past few years around two million active people because they chose to work abroad, forming important communities in Spain and Italy. At the same time, an increasing number of young people have been drawn to work for the European institutions in Brussels.
In spring, the then Labor Minister Mihai Seitan said, referring to the European target of labor force occupancy of 75 percent, that Romania is somewhere close to 50 percent. Women, youth and people aged 45 and over in Romania further encounter difficulties when looking for a job, Euroactiv noted.
However, the quoted source writes, there is a zone on the labor force market in Romania not taken into account when the occupancy rate is calculated, the one of small farms. Cristian Ghinea from the Romanian Center for European Policies says that around 30 percent of the labor force could be included into this category, namely Romanians focused on a subsistence production, to feed the respective families.
