ACTMedia - 24 Septembrie 2010
Romania and Bulgaria have great cooperation potential in the energy field, stated Bulgarian President Gheorghi Parvanov in a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu, who payed an official visit to Bulgaria.
One of the topics approached by the two heads of state within their talks was the construction of one or two hydro-electrical stations on the Danube. These stations could be located in Calarasi-Silistra and in Turnu Magurele - Nicopole. According to the two presidents, these projects could be included in the European Union Strategy for the Danube and benefit of European financing.
The two officials also discussed about the inter-connection of the two countries gas systems. Parvanov highlighted the importance of this project and gave the example of the gas crisis in 2009, when Bulgaria was not able to receive gas from Romania, being the worst affected country in Europe in the wake of Russia - Ukraine dispute.
Bulgaria is interested in participating in the AGRI project (Azerbaijan - Georgia - Romania Interconnector) on the gas transport from Azerbaijan to Europe, Parvanov also said. In his turn, President Traian Basescu said that Romania is ready to discuss with the other partner countries Bulgaria's inclusion in this project.
As well, the two presidents approached the issue of construction of new bridges over the Danube river, at Bechet-Oreahov and Calarasi-Silistra. These bridges could be also included in the Danube Strategy. President Gheorghi Parvanov underlined that the two countries have yet to attain the maximum potential in their relations, also due to the lack of infrastructure. Asked if Calafat-Vidin bridge will be completed in time, the two presidents confirmed that June 2011 deadline is within reach, Agerpres correspondent reports.
