Romania is interested in partnerships with Canadian companies in defence, energy, aviation, IT and agriculture sectors

Romania is interested in establishing effective and long term partnerships between large companies in Canada and Romanian companies in the defence industry, renewable energy, aviation industry, information and communications technology and agriculture.

The Romanian Minister of Economy, Ion Ariton, who had a meeting on Tuesday with the Canadian ambassador in Romania, Philippe Beaulne, expressed this interest.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business Environment (MECMA), on this occasion there were reviewed both the current state of bilateral economic relations, as well as future prospects. The Canadian official underlined the great importance the Canadian government attaches to bilateral economic relations and he also appreciated the Romanian support for the completion of negotiations on the CETA agreement (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) between Canada and the European Union (EU).

In this context, Philippe Beaulne presented the current stage and agenda of negotiations under this agreement, also mentioning the possibility of signing CETA by 2011 summer. Moreover, mutual financial benefits of the agreement for Canada and for the EU were estimated at over 35 billion dollars, CETA following to represent a real support for the recovery of all European economies, including Romania.

Minister Ariton reconfirmed the Romanian support for the achievement of this agreement, also voicing hope that, especially on the background of the current economic crisis, CETA will lead to a more open Canadian market for Romanian products. At the same time, the Romanian official expressed his country's interest in increasing bilateral trade volume with Canada and improving its structure and he also underlined the need for more active participation of Canadian companies as investors in the Romanian economy.

The Canadian side expressed interest in enhancing cooperation between MECMA and the Canadian organizations in the provinces and also the federal ones in the field of SMEs and reviewed some of the major investment projects of mutual interest.
