President Traian Basescu participates in autumn Council of Europe meeting

Romanian President Traian Basescu will participate on Thursday and Friday in the autumn European Council meeting, which will take place in Brussels, informs a release of the Presidential Administration sent on Wednesday.

According to the quoted source, the central theme of the meeting is the economic ruling consolidation in the European Union (EU). The Heads of State and Government of the Union member states are going to debate and agree upon the report of the task force presided by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, aiming at the economic reform in the EU. The final recommendations of the report mainly refer to the consolidation of the fiscal discipline of the member states, the implementation of a real macroeconomic surveillance and the establishment of a permanent mechanism of crisis management in the euro area, informs the release.

The European leaders will also decide on the most efficient ways of putting into practice the recommendations of the group headed by the President of the European Council. In this context, it will be debated if it is necessary and opportune to modify the Union Treaties in order to implement some of the task force's suggestions, the Presidential Administration also informs.

The European Council's meeting will create the opportunity for an opinion exchange on the preparations for the summit of the European Union and the United States of America, which will take place on November 20, in Lisbon. The EU-USA summit will approach common interest issues, with the prevalence of the economic sector, together with the priority themes of the international agenda, such as the climate changes, security and assistance for development.

Also, they are going to discuss issues related to the European Union's preparing its positions for the summits with Ukraine, on November 22, and with the Russian Federation, on December 7, for the G20 meeting in Seoul on November 11 and 12, and for the conference in Cancun on climate changes control between November 29 and December 10.

At the same time, on the sidelines of the European Council meeting, President Traian Basescu will participate in the European People's Party summit, the Presidency release also shows.
