French Embassy in Bucharest hails adoption of national education law
ACTMedia - 1 Noiembrie 2010
The French Embassy in Bucharest welcomes the adoption by the Government, which assumed responsibility in Parliament, of the national education law, which contains some provisions related to foreign languages.
In a press release on Thursday, October 28, the French Embassy said that maintaining two foreign languages among the subject matters to be assessed at high school graduation exams is part of the 2000 Lisbon Agenda and of the 2004-2006 Action Plan of the European Commission (EC) for learning foreign languages and cultural diversity and should allow citizens of the European Union (EU) the knowledge of two languages besides their mother tongue.
'More generally speaking, it is about the promotion of multilingualism in Romania, a condition of openness to the world and adaptation to the international economic life,' said the abovementioned source. For the Embassy of France in Romania, the assessment of a second language at high school graduation exams is representing a guarantee of maintaining a high quality teaching of French.
'The number of students learning our language is 1.74 million. This high interest in French language is part of a long history linking our countries, recently reinforced by the signing of strategic partnerships. This approach is reflected in the field of education through the density of cooperation relations between our universities and the signing of a new agreement for the future on the recognition of diplomas. The existence of Francophone university study programmes in Romania - very popular among the Romanian students, French and from all the Francophone countries - could be explained by this preference of Romanians for our language. In fact, Romania has recently reiterated its commitment to Francophonie on the occasion of the Summit of the International Organization of la Francophonie, which took place in Montreux, last week,' reads the quote.
The French Embassy in Bucharest thanked those who contributed to this 'beautiful success story,' and namely to the Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sports, Daniel Funeriu, to the parliamentary groups of friendship with France of the Senate and of the Chamber of Deputies, as well as to the leaders of these groups, Cristian Radulescu and Cristian Dumitrescu.
