Jose Manuel Barroso: Danube Strategy - an opportunity for EU Member States to accelerate integration benefits
ACTMedia - 9 Noiembrie 2010
The New Strategy for the Danube region will be an opportunity for the European Union Member States to accelerate the benefits of integration, but also to reduce existing disparities, the President of the European Commission (EC), Jose Manuel Barroso, underlined.
He sustains that, although significant progress has been made since the 90s, there are still significant disparities between the EU Member States, in the Danube region.
'The challenge in front of you is to accelerate the process of overcoming these regional disparities. In this context, the European strategy for the Danube is an innovation in what concerns the development of policies, produces a stable partnership between all countries that share a common ground and common problems, whether they are EU Member States or not ', Barroso also said.
He stressed that there is the possibility to create through this strategy a common vision that would lead to a prosperous future for the entire Danube region. 'The strategy covers a wide range of policy areas. We can extend the range of topics for negotiation and make room for a balanced approach between the various national interests', the EC official concluded.
More than 10,000 projects concerning the Danube Region have been drawn up in Romania, requiring funding and prioritization. Some of the most important projects Romania hopes to carry out via the Strategy are the Danube-Bucharest canal, building two new bridges to Bulgaria, rebuilding port infrastructure (Romania has 12 river ports in need of modernization) and creating an international institute for the study of the Danube Delta's ecosystems.
