ForMin Teodor Baconschi was to sign agreements on nuclear energy and road transport in Jordan
ACTMedia - 10 Ianuarie 2011
Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi, on January 8 and 9, visited the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
On the occasion of his visit to Amman, the Romanian Foreign Minister signed two bilateral legal documents, i.e. the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on peaceful utilization of nuclear energy – the only such accord signed with a Middle East country, and the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on international road passenger and freight transport.
In 2010 Romania and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan marked 45 years since diplomatic relations had been established.
The frequency of top-level bilateral visits in recent years proves privileged relations exist between Romania and Jordan: in 2005 the President of Romania visited Amman, and Hashemite sovereign visited Bucharest in 2004 and 2009.
On the occasion of the Bucharest visit by King Abdullah II on 5-6 April 2009, 10 collaboration agreements and protocols were signed, eight of which are in the economic field.
The Jordan Times: Jordan, Romania set to boost ties
His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday emphasised the need for practical steps to boost Jordanian-Romanian cooperation in a manner that reflects the high level of relations between the two countries.
The King made the remarks during a meeting with Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi, who delivered a letter from Romanian President Traian Basescu to His Majesty, a Royal Court statement said.
The letter addressed Jordanian-Romanian relations, especially economic and commercial ties, and the latest developments in the region.
The Monarch also expressed appreciation of Romania's support for Jordan in attaining advanced status with the EU, which is expected to broaden cooperation prospects between Jordan and Romania, the statement said.
Baconschi asserted the Romanian president's commitment to developing bilateral relations by following up on official meetings in preparation for a planned summit meeting between King Abdullah and Basescu.
On the latest regional developments, the King stressed the important role of the EU in eliminating obstacles hampering the peace process and chances to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, on the basis of the two-state solution, according to the statement.
King Abdullah emphasised the need for immediate action towards serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations that address final status issues, including the issues of borders and refugees.
Also on Sunday, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh stressed that time, demography and geography are factors that are not in favour of the peace talks, calling on the key players to seize the opportunity at hand and build on the current international consensus to make a just peace and ensure Palestinians their rights.
Following talks with his Romanian counterpart, Judeh urged the EU and the international community to pressure the Israeli government to end its unilateral measures that undermine the peace talks.
'We discussed issues of mutual concern as well as latest developments in the region with regards to the peace process,' Judeh told reporters.
'We appreciate the Romanian position as an EU state that supports an end to the conflict in the Middle East on a two-state solution that guarantees a viable and independent Palestinian state,' he added.
Judeh noted that the two countries have diplomatic ties of cooperation and ongoing coordination in various fields that go back to over 50 years.
He said the two sides agreed on the importance of creating a proper environment to resume serious and effective negotiations between all parties, and on the rejection of all Israeli unilateral measures, particularly the illegal settlements, which are facing widespread international rejection.
'Resolving the conflict in the region is an international interest, as it is the interest of countries in the region.'
'The alternative is more tensions and conflicts that threaten the security and stability in the region and beyond,' he added.
He noted that Baconschi's visit to Jordan is a continuation of what has been agreed upon during the visit of the King to Romania in April last year, when the two sides agreed to develop relations in the fields of culture, trade, transportation and energy.
Baconschi said his country supports the peace process and the need to reach a just and comprehensive solution that satisfies all parties, adding that his country is ready to support efforts in this regard.
'We highly appreciate the important role of Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah as a moderate player in the region,' he said. 'Romania is keen to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries in all areas of common interest and will continue to coordinate with the Kingdom on various regional and international issues,' Baconschi added.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the sides signed two cooperation agreements in the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and in the field of land transport of passengers and cargo, which replaces an earlier agreement signed in 1975 between the two countries.
Also on Sunday, HRH Princess Rym Ali, founder and president of the Jordan Media Institute, discussed with the Romanian minister means for bilateral cooperation in journalism training and education.
During his visit yesterday, Baconschi also met with Senate President Taher Masri and discussed means to activate cooperation in all fields, especially in parliamentary relations, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Deputy House Speaker Atef Tarawneh also received the Romanian foreign minister yesterday, Petra said.
Tarawneh said the Lower House will form a Jordanian-Romanian committee for parliamentary friendship to activate bilateral ties.
