Romania in December still had highest annual inflation rate in EU

December 2010 was the fifth consecutive month when Romania had the highest inflation rate in all the 27 European Union member states, 7.9 percent, higher than the 7.7 percent in November, considering that the annual inflation rate in the EU went up in December to 2.6 percent and it went beyond expectations in the eurozone, to 2.2 percent, for the first time in the last two years, according to a revised evaluation published on Friday by Eurostat (statistical office of the European Union).
The lowest annual inflation rates were recorded in Slovakia (1.3 percent), the Netherlands (1.8 percent), Germany and Cyprus (both with 1.9 percent) and the highest in Romania (7.9 percent), Estonia (5.4 percent) and Greece (5.2 percent).
In December 2010, in comparison with the previous month, the annual inflation rate went up in all the 25 EU member states that sent the data regarding inflation.
Romania holds the first position in the EU also in point of average price increase for the last twelve months with a 6.1 percent growth followed by Hungary and Greece (both with 4.7 percent).
The inflation rate in the eurozone exceeded the target set by the European Central Bank whose aim is to maintain prices below but close to two percentage points.
The eurozone has seventeen members beginning on January 1, 2010, after Estonia joined it.
