Agerpres - 25 Ianuarie 2011
Power groups GDF Suez, Iberdrola and RWE have announced on Monday, during the meeting of the companies signatory of the Investors Agreement on the construction project of Reactors 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, that they are withdrawing from this project due to reasons pertaining to each company strategy, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business Environment informs.
Companies still in this project, Nuclearelectrica, Arcelor Mittal and Enel, reaffirmed their decision to continue it.
Last week still, GDF Suez, Iberdrola and RWE announced their decision not to continue their participation in the project on the construction of Reactors 3 and 4 of Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, as economic uncertainties and those on the power market, most of them caused by the current financial crisis can not be reconciled with the necessary capital to develop a new nuclear project.
'This decision does not question the technical quality of the project, recently recognized by the European Commission, nor the commitment of GDF Suez Group, Iberdrola and RWE to develop on the energy market in Romania. GDF Suez, Iberdrola and RWE will continue to engage in new nuclear projects in this field in other countries ', GDF release noted.
EnergoNuclear shares, the project developer of Units 3 and 4 at Cernavoda, were held by Nuclearelectrica (51 percent), ArcelorMittal (6.2 percent), GDF Suez (9.15 percent), Enel (9.15 percent ), Iberdrola (6.2 percent) and RWE Power (9.15 percent).
The plant in Cernavoda currently operates two reactors, which provide 18 percent of electricity consumption nationwide.
Completion of Units 3 and 4 project of Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant will provide a new nuclear capacity of some 1,400 MW, thus doubling the amount of energy currently supplied by Cernavoda plant. At the same time, several thousand jobs during construction will be created, as well as project participation opportunities for the Romanian industry.
The European Commission issued, late last year, a favorable opinion concerning the completion of Units 3 and 4 of Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, in accordance with Article 43 of the EURATOM Treaty.
