Romanian Economy minister: IMF demands liberalization of prices for natural gas and electric energy
ACTMedia - 2 Februarie 2011
Economy minister Ion Ariton declared that the IMF demanded the liberalization of prices for natural gas and electric energy and asked for a new calculus formula for them.'We have talked with the IMF mission about the steps that need to be taken in order to ensure Romania's economic growth, the situation of mining and gas prices in the time to come included,' said Ariton.
He said that liberalization of regulated prices does not necessarily imply an increase of prices paid by consumers. In Romania, almost all electricity producers are compelled by the national authority regulating the energy sector to allocate part of their production for the population's consumption, at the prices set by the national authority.
In 2010, Romania's energy sector regulator ANRE said it will order a survey to analyze the impact of discarding regulated prices for electricity and natural gas.According to ANRE's regulations, all local power producers must sell electricity to households at prices established by the agency. Moreover, the agency sets production prices for gas producers OMV Petrom (SNP.RO) and Romgaz Medias.
During the talks they held on Tuesday with the MECMA representatives the IMF representatives suggested liberalizing natural gas prices except for household and captive consumers (hospitals, schools, kindergartens, social assistance units, public interest institutions, etc).
The subject has been examined, but no decision has been made in this respect, reads the release issued by Economy ministry, which wanted the make these clarifications after the information published by the press of liberalizing natural gas prices.
