Romania to participate with 17 companies in largest organic products fair worldwide - Biofach 2011
Agerpres - 7 Februarie 2011
Romania will be present with 17 companies in the largest fair for organic products in the world - Biofach 2011, to be held in Germany, in Nuremberg, in the period February 16 through 19, 2011, this event being supported by the Association of Organic Agriculture Operators - 'Bio Romania', together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business Environment - the Department of Foreign Trade.
'Romania's participation in Biofach 2011 is the largest to date, given that the country's pavilion is covering the largest area so far, about 300 square meters, the largest exhibitor presence of exporting firms, but also the greatest diversity of offered organic products. This year, Romania can demonstrate that organic farming represents a great potential for economic development ', Marian Cioceanu, President of Bio Romania, told AGERPRES.
He added that not only through Romania's presence in Biofach 2011, but due to the events organized during the exhibition, Romania deserves the status of exhibition partner in 2012.
'The Romanian presence in Biofach 2011, the same as the events organized during the exhibition, namely the presentation of products, workshops, symposia, can prove to German organizers - Nuremberg Messe - that Romania has the necessary skills to become a Biofach partner country in 2012. Discussions with German partners are under way, to sign such a partnership ', emphasized Marian Cioceanu.
In Romania's national pavilion the participants will display organic food, such as forest berries, organic cereals, honey, honeycomb, propolis, pollen, beeswax, organic sunflower seed and organic oil, their derivatives, organic peas, fully organic flour, cold-pressed hemp oil, hemp flour, organic bread and baked products, herbs and spices, walnuts, walnut oil, animal feed, cheeses, plum and fruit brandy, wine from organic grapes and, as an absolute premiere, Romanian art and traditional handicrafts organically certified.
'By participating in this international fair we plan to actively promote Romanian organic products and I believe we are on track because statistics place us in the top 20 exporting countries in the world as certified exporters of organic agricultural products', underscored Bio Romania president.
The association representative believes that the solution for exiting the economic crisis, and for a sustainable development of Romania on medium and long terms is given by the organic agriculture, ecotourism and ecological agri-tourism, the 'most efficient, fast and secure Romania's development strategies'.
'Ecologic Romania represents a ' next door ' green alternative, under conditions in which it holds a great potential for development of organic farming compared to other EU countries, being the 7th largest EU country in terms of area and population. In addition, Romania has exceptionally fertile land in the southern and western plains, with reasonable rainfall and access to a large network of rivers that can be used for irrigation, as well as a large number of farmers with good agricultural training', said Cioceanu.
According to Bio Romania, in the last 40 years and especially over the past 20 years, the agricultural land in Romania saw a very low level of chemical fertilizers, and in the past 10 years between one and three million hectares of arable land of the best quality remained uncultivated, which means that in some areas the conversion period to organic farming is reduced to just one year. To these, it can be added a very competitive transportation price on the Danube, for instance for cereals this is of 15 - 20 euros / MT.
Organically cultivated area in Romania has increased from 190,000 hectares, in 2007, to 250,000 hectares in 2010, according to estimates. Despite this, the number of those who practice organic farming has dropped significantly from 4,100, in 2008, to 3,200 in 2009, according to the Ministry of Agriculture data. As well, production of organic food has fallen from 90,000 tons in 2008 to 74,000 tonnes in 2009.
Romania receives EU funds of 3.098 million euros to improve the quality of agricultural products in the organic farming sector, the amount made available for farms within the conversion period - ie, switching from conventional to the organic farming.
