EC announces priority area coordinators for EU Strategy for Danube Region
ACTMedia - 4 Februarie 2011
Romania will be coordinating several priority areas of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region: the improvement of mobility and intermodality (the inland waterways area, together with Austria), the promotion of culture and tourism (together with Bulgaria) and the environmental risk management (together with Hungary).
European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn made the above-mentioned announcement in Budapest on Thursday.
European Commissioner Johannes Hahn on Thursday, together with Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Janos Martonyi, announced the countries and regions that would be coordinating the priority areas of work for implementing the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. These countries will lead the strategy's implementing by agreeing on a working programme and identifying sources of finance with other countries involved and partners such as the non-governmental organizations.
Eleven priority areas have been identified and the Strategy aims at a strong cooperation among countries, making a more optimal use of all EU funding available, without reserving new funds, setting new rules or creating new institutions.
Before the announcement of the priority area coordinators, European Commissioner Johannes Hahn said that he was pleased that 'every member state in the region will lead at least one area of work and that a number of the non member states will also play a proactive role.'
The coordinators will immediately start preparations for the implementation of the Strategy, identifying the most immediate actions to help the region flourish and fully exploit its economic potential.
The Danube Region reaches from Germany, in the West, to Ukraine, in the East. It faces many challenges including untapped shipping potential, lack of road and railway connections, and uncoordinated efforts in education, research and innovation.
The countries involved in the EU Strategy for the Danube Region are: Germany (the states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria), Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, which are all EU member states, plus Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
