Current account deficit increases 5% in 2010

The current account of the balance of payments registered a 5.158 billion euro deficit in 2010, increasing 5 percent from 2009, because of the increase in the negative balances of incomes and services and of the current transfers surplus decline, according to a National Bank of Romania (BNR) release.
According to the BNR provisional data, the current account deficit in 2010 was 50.3 percent financed through direct investments of non-residents in Romania, amounting to 2.596 billion euros, compared with 3.488 billion euros in 2009, out of which equity stakes accounted for 2.040 billion euros and intra-group loans amounted to 556 million euros.
The BNR provisional data show that the negative income balance increased to 1.96 billion euros in 2010 and the negative service balance to 745 million euros. The current transfers surplus dropped to 3.411 billion euros.
The negative balance of goods and services amounted to 6.609 billion euros, that of transport services totalled 156 million euros and that of tourist-travel services accounted for 386 million euros.
The medium and long-term external debt on December 31, 2010, was 72.019 billion euros, that is 79.3 percent of the total external debt, increasing 9.5 percent from December 31, 2009.
The direct public debt, according to the BNR provisional data, increased to 15.8 billion euros at the end of 2010, and the publicly guaranteed debt increased to 1.71 billion euros.
The loans from the International Monetary Fund granted within the stand-by agreement with Romania amounted to 9.082 billion euros at the end of 2010.
The medium and long-term deposits of non-residents increased to 8.228 billion euros at the end of December 2010.
The short-term external debt amounted to 18.746 billion euros at the end of 2010 and represented 20.7 percent of the total external debt, increasing 21.6 percent compared with the end of 2009.
The medium and long-term external debt service ratio was 32.1 percent in 2010, compared with 33.9 percent in 2009. The goods and services import cover stood at 8.6 months on December 31, 2010, compared with 8.5 months on December 31, 2009.
