Feasibility study of AGRI project could be ended in April 2012
ACTMedia - 15 Februarie 2011
The feasibility study of the AGRI (Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania-Interconnector) gas pipe project could end by April 1, 2012, according to the protocol signed on Monday at the ministerial meeting in Bucharest on the development of the AGRI project, reads a release of the Romanian Ministry of Economy, Trade and the Business Environment.
The document promotes the cooperation among Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary in offering support to the participating companies to find and get necessary finance to prepare the feasibility study of the AGRI project and to jointly support drafting the necessary papers to be sent in due time to be granted European funds, as well as the encouragement of information exchange among participating companies.
Romanian Minister of Economy, Trade and the Business Environment Ion Ariton, Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev, Georgian Minister of Energy Alexander Khetaguri and Hungarian Minister of National Development Tamas Fellegi on Monday, during the inter-ministerial meeting in Bucharest, signed the protocol on carrying on the development of the AGRI project.
According to the Ministry of Economy, among the advantages of the AGRI project there are the flexibility rendered by LNG technology (liquefied natural gas), the shorter route of Azerbaijani gas to the European market, the creation of the inter-connector between Romania and Hungary (Arad-Szeged) and last but not least, the political support expressed by all the four partner countries.
The AGRI project, deemed by Romanian authorities as the cheapest way to transport natural gas from the Caspian Sea and Central Asia to Europe, follows the route Baku-Kulevi-Constanta. The natural gas from Azerbaijan will be liquefied in Kulevi and then transported across the Black Sea to Constanta Port (south-eastern Romania) where it is turned back into gas by the LGN terminal.
According to Agerpres, the project might cost 4-4.5 billion euros, at a capacity of up to eight billion cubic metres natural gas, and its construction could be finished in a year or two after the feasibility study is made, said Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev on Monday, when signing the memorandum of the ministerial meeting.
