Romania's Presentment Traian Basescu and President of the European Council Hermann van Rompuy discussed on Thursday in Bucharest the financing of the European Stability Mechanism, with Basescu asking van Rompuy to break down the computation of the contribution of each member states that will not put Romania in difficulty.
'I will tell you a few words about our support for the amendment of the Lisbon Treaty to establish the European Stability Mechanism. In our conversation I insisted on an aspect related to the contribution of each member state of the European Union to the financing of the Stability Mechanism. We have only one problem here about which I warned Mr. President van Rompuy: the distribution of the contributions as accepted by most of the member states would put Romania at a disadvantage. That is why I asked for a way of computing the contribution that will not put Romania in difficulty,' President Basescu told a joint news conference with European Council President van Rompuy at the end of official talks. He also said that a careful analysis was made of the Competitiveness Pact.
'We made a careful analysis of the Competitiveness Pact and we are glad that Mr. Van Rompuy will submit in the days ahead a revised proposal about adding some elements to what the task force he leads presented to us at the last December European summit. It is about the proposals regarding the policy of the unitary cost of labour and competitiveness and the policy concerning the sustainability of public finances. And there were also proposals related to stimulating competition,' said Basescu.
European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Thursday welcomed the way Romania implemented the assistance program agreed with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.Van Rompuy said Romania consolidated its economy, public finances, macroeconomic policies, as well as the fiscal responsibility and unitary wage legislation. He added the country ensured the stability of its financial system amid a world economic crisis.
Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc had a meeting with Van Rompuy Thursday and insisted Romania should be evaluated correctly for Schengen accession.'We are aware that Romania will be the outer border of the European Union and we will do and have done everything necessary to secure our borders. All we want is to be fairly evaluated and not be imposed conditions that have nothing to do with Schengen accession. We expect the Hungarian EU presidency to set an accession calendar,' said Boc.Van Rompuy said he appreciates Romania's progress in view of Schengen accession and said this is a priority for the EU's Hungarian presidency. He said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban gave assurance Hungary will take all the necessary steps to allow Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen area if they meet all the requirements.
