Volume of Romania's total trade with Hong Kong Special Autonomous Region of China stood, at the end of last year, at the level of 105.35 million dollars, announced on Thursday, in a business seminar, Anca-Rodica Turcea, senior adviser in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business (MECMA).
Last year, Romanian exports attained 89.18 million dollars, increasing by 8.18 percent compared with 2009, while imports stood at 16.17 million dollars, down by 3.1 percent compared to previous year, so that the trade balance was favorable to Romania in 2010, with a surplus of 73.01 million dollars.
'The economic and commercial relationship with Hong Kong and Macao has experienced over the past two years a strong upward trend, reflected by a tripling in 2009 of the volume of exports to these markets and an increase of about 49 percent in 2010, with a surplus of 5 to 1 for the Romanian exporters', MECMA representative added.
It also stressed that the Romanian exports are based, among others, on cars and appliances, electrical equipment, plastics and textiles and the imports include similar products plus optical instruments and devices.
According to the advisor of the Ministry of Economy, over 9,888 registered companies operate in Romania with Chinese citizens as shareholders or are joint ventures.
Some Chinese-owned companies have major investments underway in Romania, for instance Golden Way that has allocated 28 million euros for a business in the field of construction materials in the County of Constanta.
Another major investment, of 15 million euros, was made by Eurosport DHS in Deva, this bicycle manufacturer generating 250 local jobs.
Finally, Anca-Rodica Turcea reminded ongoing discussions on 'China's involvement in projects aimed at the construction of Bucharest-Sibiu motorway, of the Capital belt line and the development of Constanta Port'.
Referring then to the Bucharest-Beijing flights, suspended by TAROM in 2003, which led to a 'disconnection of Romania from one of the most dynamic growth poles of the planet - China, the second largest economic power in the world', MECMA advisor voiced hope that those flights will be resumed 'this year.'
On Thursday, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels and Hong Kong Trade Development Council have organized a business seminar in Bucharest.
