Ministry of Finance borrows over 140 mln euros from Romanian commercial banks

The Ministry of Public Finance (MFP) on Monday borrowed nearly 142.85 million euros (600 million lei, 1 Euro = 4.20 lei) from the commercial banks operating on the Romanian market, by issuing treasury bonds at discount in a tender via the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
The state bonds have the maturity set at one year and the average level of the yield the issue was assigned to amounts to 6.92 percent. The weighted average level of the discount rate stood at 6.98 percent.
The total value of the issue ran to 600 million lei and the total demand of the 12 banks that participated in the tender amounted to 1.22 billion lei.
At the tender, 12 banks submitted offers for buying state bonds, namely the Alpha Bank Romania, the BRD - Groupe Societe Generale, the Carpatica Commercial Bank, the Romanian Commercial Bank, Transylvania Bank, Bancpost, CEC Bank, Citibank Romania, ING, Raiffeisen Bank, RBS Bank Romania and the UniCredit Tiriac Bank.
The MFP in 2010 took a loan exceeding 41 billion lei from the domestic market, after in 2009 it attracted nearly 65 billion lei. In Feb., the amount of the bank loans was 4.61 billion lei and since the beginning of the year 12.1 billion lei.
