Statistics: Monthly average earning drops 5 percent in January 2011 from previous month

The monthly gross nominal average earning in January 2011 stood at 1,963 lei, 5 percent lower compared with the previous month, informs a release of the National Institute of Statistics (INS) remitted on Monday.
The monthly net nominal average earning accounted for 1,424 lei, decreasing 72 lei from the previous month, which means a 4.8 percent decline.
The real wage in January 2011 was 5.5 percent lower compared with the previous month, and 6.6 percent lower compared with the real wage of January 2010.Compared with October 1990, the real wage index stood at 117 percent, declining 6.9 percentage points from the level registered in December 2010.
INS points out that the real wage index is calculated as the ratio between the net nominal wage index and the consumer price index.
In January 2011, in most of the economic sector activities, the net average earning was lower than in December 2010, when occasional bonuses (holiday bonuses and winter holiday bonuses included), cash aids, amounts from other funds (gift vouchers included) were granted or higher productions and revenues were achieved. Also, the net average earning in January 2011 decreased because of wage difficulties and leaves without pay, the cited source explains.
Compared with July 2010 (the month when the 25 percent cut of the gross basic salaries, according to law 118/2010, was implemented) the net average earning in January 2011 in the public sector increased 17.5 percent in public administration, 16.2 percent in education, and namely 11.7 in health care and social assistance.
Compared with January 2010, the net nominal average earning decreased 0.1 percent in January 2011. The real wage index compared with the same period of the previous year stood at 93.4 percent, declining 6.6 percent.
