ACTMedia - 8 Martie 2011
Romania is the first country in the Danube basin that has completed the Management Plan of the Danube, the dams issue being included, said on Monday, in a specialized seminar, Laszlo Borbely, Minister of Environment and Forests.
'I believe that one of the major problems is not to intervene where Mother Nature has worked. Perhaps, in the last 21 years, it was not always made what was necessary to preserve this wonderful area / Danube Delta - editor's note / in optimal environmental conditions. We supported the initiatives of local authorities in respect of the Delta Development Strategy. The problem of dams is included in the strategy completed late last year and valid until 2015. We are the first country in the region having completed the Danube Management Plan', stressed Borbely.
The official noted, however, that discussions on fishing and some regulations on the movement by boat could continue. 'As regards the fishing area and some regulations that oversee the movement by boats, we can discuss. We / the ministry - editor's note / have quite a lot of initiatives and 100 million lei, with another 65 million set to be disbursed. In two weeks time, we will go to Delta to see how things are in the field ', said Laszlo Borbely.
The EU Strategy for the Danube Initiative was launched by Romania and Austria in 2008 and puts into practice the new European concept of territorial cohesion.
The Danube Strategy will be an internal strategy of the EU, to which are also invited third riparian states. The four areas proposed by the European Commission and which will be the strategy axis: connectivity (sustainable transport and energy networks), environment protection, water resources and risk management, social and economic development (culture, education, research, tourism, rural development, domestic market) and an improved system of governance (institutional capacity and internal security).
Romania's contribution to the development of this strategy is a result of collaboration between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Transport, Regional Development and Tourism, Environment, Economy, Public Finances, Agriculture, Interior, Culture and, last but not least, Education.
Starting with 2011, Danube strategy guidelines and projects are to be put into practice. The strategy will be completed in the first half of 2011, when the Presidency of the European Union Council is held by Hungary.
The Danube Delta, the only Delta in the world declared Biosphere Reserve, is considered a living museum of biodiversity, due to the 30 types of ecosystems, being the third area in the world in terms of biodiversity after the Barrier Reef, Australia and Galapagos Archipelago (Ecuador ).
With its 15,000 inhabitants in the 28 localities and the town of Sulina, the Danube Delta is considered the most cosmopolitan area of the country, alongside the majority Romanian population 22 other nationalities living there. Save the Danube and Delta Association held on Monday, at the Romanian Parliament, the fifth edition of a national symposium 'We have a Delta. How do we proceed? '.
