Romania's agricultural exports up 40% in 2010

Romania managed a more than twofold reduction of its agri-food trade deficit from 1.53 billion euros in 2009 to 729.45 million euros at the end of 2010, with exports advancing 40 pct to 3.06 billion euros at the end of 2010, shows data provided to Agerpres by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
Imports of agri-food products last year hit 3.79 billion euros, slightly up compared to 2009, when they totalled 3.71 billion euros.
In 2009, Romania's agri-food exports stood at 2.18 billion euros.
According to MADR data, Romania collected last year 2.23 billion euros in proceeds from exports to EU countries, slightly higher compared to the 1.68 billion euros collected in 2009. Romania's exports to other countries last year stood at 823.23 million euros, almost twice the figure registered in 2009 (499.9 million euros).
Imports from EU countries were the main source of agri-food products for Romania, with a total of 3.07 billion euros in 2010, whereas imports from non-EU states totaled just 720.66 million euros.
MADR data also show that the categories to contribute the most to export proceeds were intra- and extra-Community trade with maize, wheat and maslin (mixture of wheat and rye) exports, as well as exports of cigarettes, cigarillos and cigars (20,616.8 tonnes). Romania also exported rape seeds (1.052 million tones), sunflower seeds (557,409) tonnes and refined sunflower oil (146,883 tonnes).
Livestock exports further top the country's trade exchanges with agri-food products, ranking immediately after cereals - especially trade with cattle (51,810.7 tonnes), sheep and goats (44,742 tonnes).
Among others, Romania also exported last year,meat and poultry organs, cane or beet sugar, bakery and confectionery, honey, wine, mineral water and chocolate.
As for Romania's agricultural imports, pork - fresh or chilled - further tops this ranking, with some 198,194 tonnes acquired last year from the intra- and extra-Community markets, followed by cane sugar (465,653 tonnes) and prepared foods (52,765 tonnes).
