IRES study : Interethnic relations in Romania are generally good

A study by the Romanian Institute for Assessment and Strategy (IRES), sent on Wednesday , reveals that, in recent years, relations between Romanians and minority ethnic groups are generally good.
'Best appreciation is given to the relations between Romanians and ethnic Germans (84 percent - good and very good), followed by those between the Romanians and Hungarians (63 percent good and very good). On a less favorable positioning are relations between Romanians and Roma ethnics, viewed as good and very good only by 43 percent of respondents ', the IRES study informs.
Acceptance degree of the Hungarian minority is a high one, over 80 percent of those interviewed saying that they would like to work with Hungarians or would want them as neighbors and friends.
The same study says that 55 percent of Romanians view relations between Romania and Hungary as good and very good, while 35 percent think they are bad and very bad, and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR, in the ruling coalition) is perceived negatively, including by some ethnic Hungarians.
Half of the respondents have a bad and very bad opinion as for the possibility of Hungarians in Romania to get dual citizenship, while 47 percent have a good opinion and very good. At the same time, however, 72 percent of respondents disagree with the gesture of some presidents of county councils in Transilvania (central-western region) to apply for the Hungarian citizenship.
IRES opinion poll was conducted on a representative sample of 1,177 people, of over 18 years old, in the period March 17-18, with a margin of error of + / - 2.9 percent, employing the CATI method (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview).
