Exporters fearing RON 3.6-3.8 to the Euro exchange rates
ACTMedia - 6 Aprilie 2011
Romania's exporting companies are worried the local currency, the leu (RON), will strengthen against the European single currency to an exchange rate of RON 3.6-3.8 to the euro and sent a message to the National Bank of Romania (BNR) that they are worried about 'the sudden' developments of late in the exchange rates of the leu.
'Because of the positive economic signals, we are aware that the local currency should strengthen to RON 3.6-3.8 to the euro, but not in the manner it did the last couple of days. A 4-5-percent appreciation in just some days is unbearable to exporters. We are for stability and developments that lead to the strengthening of the leu, but in a slow, not quick mode. Such strengthening is devastating to the exporters,' Secretary General of the National Association of Romanian Exporters and Importers (ANEIR) Mihai Ionescu told a conference on exports on Tuesday.
He added that at this pace, exporters would lose 100 million euros a month, plus medium and long-term losses because the companies no longer know what exchange rate to use to set their factory prices and are discouraged from signing new contracts or carrying through the existing contracts.
Ionescu also said that speculators have once again found excellent investment opportunities in Romania and are toying with the exchange rates and the interest rates.
'BNR is fighting against them, but we say that is not enough,' Ionescu pointed out.He mentioned an excellent trend in exports during the crisis and a continual increase in exports over the past 17 months. ANEIR says these developments were supported by the stability of the exchange rate as the main pillar.
Before the crisis, exporters counted on an exchange rate of RON 3.6-3.8 to the euro, while they expected a RON 4.1-4.3 to the euro during the crisis.
