ACTMedia - 11 Aprilie 2011
The public sector's average gross wage dipped in Q4 2010 to RON 1,701, beneath the RON 2,013 average registered in the private sector, while the total number of employees in the governmental sector decreased by 132,000 persons over 2008-2010, shows the Tax Council Annual Report. (1 euro was trading for RON 4.5 at the end of 2010)
According to the document, until 2010 the average wage in the public sector had been gaining over the private sector, but the 25 pct wage cut in the former beginning with the second half of 2010 sent the public sector average pay beneath the private sector average.
The Tax Council report shows that over the 2005-2008 interval, the number of public employees increased by about 170,000 to 1.4 million, with the steepest rise registered with local authorities (some 90,000), plus a 50,000 increase of the central administration staff.
Subsequently, between the end of 2008 and December 2010, the total number of employees in the governmental sector fell by 132,000 to 1.26 million. More than half of the personnel cuts were operated at local level (about 76,000), of which 29,000 persons in pre-university education. The number of employees in the health sector also witnessed a sharp decline, by about 33,000.
Self-financed institutions, most of them hospitals and universities, now employ about 380,000 people and the rest of approximately 600,000 people work with local authorities, Agerpres informs.
