OTP: Loans in lei - more realistic option for consumption loans
Agerpres - 2 Mai 2011
Loans in lei are a much more realistic option for the consumption loans, said OTP Bank Romania's Deputy executive manager Adrian Chichita.
'As far as there are considerable differences between the interest rate in lei and this in euros, it will be very difficult to guide our clients toward the lei loans, particularly in the mortgage loan. It's true it would be ideal that the banks should give loans in the same currency the borrowers are paid their monthly income in, but this is difficult as far as, for instance, the client asking for a loan in euros has to pay significantly lower monthly installments and is eligible for a higher credit limit compared to a loan in the Romanian currency. In exchange, the loan in lei is a much more realistic an option for the consumption loans,' OTP Bank Romania told Agerpres.
Romania's Central Bank (BNR) governor Mugur Isarescu has recently said that BNR is working on run of regulations aimed at lessening the loans in hard currency to individuals.
