Dialogue between the US official Ellen Tauscher and Foreign Minister Baconschi

Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi, on Wednesday, assured US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs Ellen Tauscher that Romania is to observe the commitments it made regarding its participation in the actions in the operation theaters.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) release, the talks between Baconschi and Tauscher mainly approached topics such as the Romanian-US bilateral relations, ways to develop their strategic partnership and the issue of the deployment of compounds of the antimissile system in Romania.
'The dialogue between the US official and Foreign Minister Baconschi offered the opportunity of a deeper analysis of the stage and the prospects of streamlining and consolidating the bilateral strategic partnership. ForMin Teodor Baconschi has been also pleading for a closer Romanian-American cooperation in the international issues of common interest. The Romanian dignitary also stressed that the finalization of the Accord on the deployment of compounds of the antimissile defense system in Romania will give a fresh impetus to the bilateral relations between Romanian and the US, particularly in terms of substantiating the high level political dialogue,' MAE release reads.
The two-day visit by the head of the US delegation negotiating the Accord on Romania's participation in the US antimissile system in Europe happens in the context of the public announcement of the location in Romania where elements of the US antimissile system and of the new rounds of negotiations over the Accord on Romania's participation in the US antimissile system, Agerpres reports.
Ellen Tauscher: Anti-missile system is defensive and not pointed against Russia
US Under State Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Ellen Tauscher said that the anti-missile system was a defensive one and did not aim at destabilizing Russia's strategic system. Our system is a defensive one. We have said this very clearly. Our system will not destabilize Russia's strategic system. We have good relations with Russia. We have just ratified the new Start Treaty, we are working together on various other issues. It is a system that will defend NATO and, if Russia chooses to work with us in a cooperative manner, the system will defend Russia, too. We work together so our systems should acquire a better performance, the US official pointed out at the Palace of Parliament on Wednesday.
According to her, the Unites States of America maintains a constant dialogue with Russia and its representatives to NATO. Ellen Tauscher and the delegation she leads have met members of the commissions for foreign policies and defence and of the 'Pro-America' Friendship Group of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
Russia might adopt countermeasures to the anti-missile shield in Romania
Romania and the US should expect countermeasures from Russia, as a response to the agreement to place the American anti-missile shield in Romania, a Russian official said on Wednesday, quoted by RIA Novosti. On Tuesday, Romanian President Basescu announced that the anti missile shield will be placed at Deveselu, Olt county South Romania following the agreement with the US. Russian official, Konstantin Kosachev said that the US, NATO and Romanian officials should expect Russia to take countermeasures.
