Eurostat: Romania posts second biggest March growth in retail trade in EU

The volume of retail trade in Romania advanced 0.8 percent this March, on a monthly basis, being outperformed only by Estonia's 2.1 percent rise, according to first estimates released on Wednesday by the Eurostat European Statistics Office.
In March 2011, compared with February 2011, the volume of retail trade fell by 1.0 percent in the euro area - Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland - and by 0.8 percent in the EU27.
In March 2011, compared with March 2010, the retail sales index decreased by 1.7 percent in the euro area and by 1.0 percent in the EU27. In March 2011, compared with March 2010, 'Food, drinks and tobacco' fell by 2.1percent in the euro area and by 2.3 percent in the EU 27. The non food sector fell by 0.8 percent in the euro area, but increased by 0.4 percent in the EU 27.
Among the member states for which data are available, total retail trade decreased in nine and rose in twelve. The largest decreases were recorded in Spain (-9.6 percent), Denmark (-8.7 percent) Portugal (-6.8 percent) and Romania (-5.0 percent), and the highest increases in Poland (+6.9 percent), Luxembourg (+5.7 percent) and Lithuania (+5.2 percent).
Data released by Romania's National Statistics Institute (INS) indicate that the business turnover of Romanian retailers (except for retailing of motor vehicles and motorcycles) was down 5.5 percent, in unadjusted terms, in the first quarter of 2011 from the first quarter of 2010 as a result of a 10-percent drop in the sales of food, drinks and tobacco, a 5.1-percent drop in fuel retail sales at special shops and a 1.3-percent slide in non-food sales.
