World Bank: Romania has lowest absorption rate of European funds in EU
ACTMedia - 11 Mai 2011
Romania has the lowest rate of structural funds absorption in the entire European Union, World Bank's (WB) director for Central and Eastern Europe Peter Harrold told a symposium held by the WB Romania office in Bucharest.
It is a shame, but Romania has the lowest rate of structural funds absorption in the entire European Union. The convergence policies of the Union must be observed and the transfer of the funds coming from tax-payers from richer to poorer countries is instrumental for attaining convergence. That is the reason why the regional cohesion policy was established and these funds were generated, yet Romania does not benefit from this European policy, as simple as that, Peter Harrold stressed in his speech.
The absorption is made the moment it plays a central role in the economic policy and strategy of a certain country. The absorption will improve when the leading Government members, the Prime Minister included, decide to request weekly briefing on the absorption process and when targets are set whose accomplishment should lie with the ministers. Effort, hard work and concentration are necessary for a higher absorption rate. I hope the European funds absorption will henceforward become a priority for the Government, said Peter Harrold.
EU official Joost Kuhlmann added that Romania might be allocated less funds in the following community budget exercise, unless it improves the absorption rate, which is now standing at 3 percent of the available funds, 19 billion euros.
