INS: Average monthly inflation of 0.66% in April, 0.7% in first 4 months of 2011

The average monthly inflation rate in Romania in the first four months of 2011 amounted to 0.7 percent, having reached 0.66 percent in April, against March 2011.

Compared to the same period of 2010, prices in April surged by 8.34 percent, according to the figures the National Statistics Institute (INS) released on Tuesday.

The average price increase over the past 12 months (May 2010 - April 2011) compared to the previous 12 months (May 2009 - April 2010) computed against the consumer price index and the harmonized index of consumer prices was 7.2 percent.

According to INS, food prices went up 0.92 percent in April from March 2011 and the non-food prices edged up 0.87 percent, while prices for services plunged by 0.42 percent.

The Romanian finance and banking analysts have predicted an April 2011 monthly inflation of 8.2 percent and annual inflation of 0.5 percent.

Governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Mugur Isarescu said last week the inflation rate prognosis for 2011 stands at 5.1 percent and for 2012 the rate might run to 3.6 percent.
