Visit of minister Teodor Baconschi to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland

The minister of foreign affairs Teodor Baconschi made on 16 May 2011 a visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the invitation of the British counterpart William Hague.
The two officials discussed ways to stimulate bilateral commercial exchanges and British investment in Romania, confirming the positive trend of the latest years. „ We have an ambitious cooperation agenda, very dynamic, to confirm the objectives of the strategic partnership of the two countries. I am optimistic that these objectives will be reflected in economic exchanges and new investments to increase the competitivity of the Romanian economy' the minister of foreign affairs Teodor Baconschi said.
Referring to European priorities, there were evaluated mutual objectives on the EU agenda for econmic growth and competitivity stimulation, as well as positioning towards the financial perspective of the EU post – 2013. Both countries support the domestic market, the promotion of competitivity and innovation and the support of business environment.
The two ministers expressed their support for the regional initiatives of the EU destined to Western Balkans and Eastern Neighbourhood, especially the Eastern partnership. In this context, the Romanian minister of foreign affairs appreciated the progress recorded by the Republic of Moldova on its road to the EU and required the support of the British partners for European projects destined to this country.
The two officials focused on the need to promote a European agenda to include cooperation partners in the southern neighbourhood. On this dimension, they discussed about the southern-Mediterranian zone. As allies, Romania and the United Kingdom have a mutual interest to a democratic and stable evolution of the region. The two ministers expressed their trust in the success of operations in Lybia.
As regards the participation of the two countries in the Afganistan operation, there was acknowledged the excellent bilateral collaboration on a political and military level and there were evaluated the perspectives for the continuation of this collaboration in the process of reconstruction and transition.
During his visit to London, minister Teodor Baconschi met Greg Hands, the chairman of the parliamentary group for friendship with Romania and the parliamentary secretary of the Exchequer to whom he sent his request for support on the elimination of the restrictions regarding Romanian workers the MFA press release says.
