Some EUR 3.4 bln in European funding already in Romanian farmers' accounts

About EUR 3.4 bln have by now reached the accounts of Romanian farmers in payments for development, while 37 pct of the total EU funding for agriculture is earmarked for the Romanian agricultural sector, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Valeriu Tabara told a specialist conference on Tuesday.

The cited official added that around two billion euros have been spent under the National Rural Development Programme (PNDR), while another four billion euros are engaged under the same program.

'As much as 2 billion euros have been spent so far, and another four billion euros are engaged under the National Rural Development Programme. I would want us to get close to three billion euros in structural funds absorbed by the end of the year. Also, a number of 61,000 projects have been submitted until the current date (May 24) under PNDR. Romania cannot be a food importing country. Heavyweight investors do not come in such a system. The end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 give us certainty that 2011 will be a good agricultural year,' said Valeriu Tabara.

The conference on 'European Funding - the Opportunity for Economic Relaunch' takes place on May 24 in Bucharest, approaching subjects related to the major issues in accessing European funds and solutions to solve them.
