Almost 3% of funding available to Romania under SOP Environment absorbed so far
ACTMedia - 8 Iunie 2011
Romania absorbed nearly 3 pct of the total European funding made available under the 'Environment' Sectoral Operational Program, although it is a champion in terms of contract engagement, Minister of Environment and Forestry Laszlo Borbely told a specialist conference on Tuesday.
'SOP Environment solves the issue of cleaner water, waste, polluting thermal power stations in several cities, and biodiversity programs. We are speaking so far about 5.6 billion euros earmarked from the European Union, of which the signed contracts account for 5.3 billion euros, but only 100-110 million euros - that is about 3 pct of the total allocation - have been effectively absorbed. I hope that we are able to speed up the absorption of EU funds in the second half of the year,' the Minister of Environment said.
The Sectoral Operational Program 'Environment' is the document that sets out the strategy for the allocation of European funds for Romania's environmental sector over 2007-2013. The program was approved by the European Commission on July 11, 2007.
The total budget assigned to Romania under SOP Environment is about 5.6 billion euros, of which 4.5 billion in EU non-reimbursable funding and over one billion euros in national contribution.SOP Environment was worked out by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, acting as Program Managing Authority.
The program's enforcement period is 2007-2013, but its objectives pursue Romania's development needs beyond 2013, by investments that lay the foundation for the sustainable development of environmental infrastructure.
