The delegation was headed by the representative for relationship with Romania of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Joseph Niemela, member of the Board of UNESCO Basic Scientific Programme.
State Secretary Doru Costea emphasized MAE support from the onset and the intention to further back up this project implementation, through a sustained lobbying, both at inter-ministerial level, as well as by approaching UNESCO Board in this regard. On this occasion, he highlighted the importance of investments in research, whose beneficial results, even if not immediate, far beyond exceed the initial costs.
During the meeting, the sides expressed their conviction that the foundation of an UNESCO Institute of Physics Research in Bucharest could be an effective tool for both the scientific community in Romania, and also for the achievement of UNESCO targets in the fields of education, scientific research and assistance for development. The interest in implementing this project has been also evoked by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, during the official visit she paid to Bucharest, on April 26-27, 2011.
The delegation also includes Dr. Osman Benchikh, director of UNESCO's program for renewable energies and Dr. Sabin Stoica, 1st rank researcher at the Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering - Horia Hulubei (IFIN-HH), president of the Initiative Group for the setting up an Institute for education and research in physics, under the auspices of UNESCO, on the Magurele platform.
The establishment of an UNESCO research institute in physics in Bucharest would be a great opportunity for highlighting the scientific potential and the existing infrastructure on the Magurele platform, thus attracting to Romania important researchers from all over the world to participate in projects of international magnitude, as well as for promoting cooperation with other prestigious scientific institutes worldwide.
