Survey: Most EU citizens, including Romanians voice deep concern over environmental issues
ACTMedia - 22 Iunie 2011
Most citizens of the European Union (EU) voice their deep concern over environmental issues saying that a more efficient use of natural resources and the protection of the environment could boost the economic growth in the EU, shows the latest survey conducted by the European Commission and released on Monday.
Romanians are not an exception: 92 percent of respondents consider environmental problems as 'important' (95 percent in the EU). At the same time, 74 percent and 83 percent of Romanians respectively believe that the environmental protection and a more efficient use of natural resources could boost the economic growth in the EU, compared to 77 percent of EU citizens and 83 percent respectively, revealed the survey conducted on April 13 - May 8 across the 27 EU member states.
European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potocnik noticed the survey reveals that the Europeans are more concerned than ever about the problems affecting the environment and furthermore their statements show an active involvement and not only good intentions: two out of three Europeans say they have sorted the waste in order to be recycled in the past month, more than half of Europeans try to reduce the energy bill, four out of ten seek to use less disposable products and more and more Europeans opt for greener means of transport.
The survey shows that EU citizens become more and more aware of the pressure put on natural resources. When asked about the possible solutions at this problem, 8 out of 10 respondents said they wish the companies would make greater efforts to better use natural resources, over 7 out of 10 wish the governments would take more measures in this regard and about 7 out of 10 believe a more active engagement of citizens is also necessary.
Only 7 percent of the polled Romanians said their government takes enough measures for the better use of resources (20 percent of EU citizens), but they proved a higher level of self-criticism when they said that only 14 percent of citizens struggle enough in order to better utilize natural resources, against the EU average of 25 percent.
According to 36 percent of Europeans and 39 percent of Romanians, the solution to improve the protection of the environment is to impose heavy fines on those who pollute the city, with the Romanians backing to a greater extent the necessity of a more severe legislation in this respect (31 percent) against 21 percent other members of the EU.
