Unemployment rate increased to 7.6% in Q1 - 741,000 people were jobless

The unemployment rate was 7.6 percent in the first quarter of 2011, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) criteria, 0.3 percent higher than the previous quarter and lower on a year-over-year basis from 8.1 percent, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The standard deviation between the two ILO unemployment rates was 1.4 percent by gender (8.2 percent for men and 6.8 percent for women) and 2.9 percent by residential areas (8.8 percent for the urban areas compared to 5.9 percent for the rural areas). The ILO unemployment rate reached the highest level (23.6 percent) with young people (15-24 years). Romania's active population was 9.81 million people in the first quarter of 2011, 9.069 million of whom were employed and 741,000 were ILO unemployed.
According to the INS data, the employment rate of the population of working age (15-64 years) was 58 percent in the first quarter of 2011 and the employment rate of those aged between 20 and 64 was 62.5 percent, 7.5 percent lower than the national 70 percent target set in the Europe 2020 strategy context.
The economic dependence ratio (the number of inactive and unemployed persons for each 1000 employed) was 1361 per mille, higher in the case of women (1697 per mille) as well as for those in the rural areas (1432 per mille). The labour force activity rate of the population of working age (15-64 years old) was 63 percent in the aforementioned period.
