Romanians' average income at EUR 196 per person in Q1

The Romanians' overall average monthly income stood at 2,318 lei per home and 804 lei per person (some 196 euros) in the first quarter of 2011, in nominal terms, while spending totalled 2,098 lei a month per household (728 lei per person). (1 euro= 4.1 lei)

The money earnings amounted to an average 1,867 lei a month per household (648 lei per person), while the in-kind gains were of 450 lei a month per household (156 lei per person), the National Institute of Statistics announced on Monday. Wages and associated income made up the most important source of income (47.6 percent of a home's total incomes).Also contributing to a home's overall income in Jan.-March were the earnings from social services at 24.9 percent, earnings from farming at 1.9 percent, from independent non-farming activities at 2.6 percent and earnings from one's property and sale of home assets at 1.7 percent. A significant share is held by the in-kind earnings at 19.4 percent, mainly from a family's providing their agri-foodstuff needs from their own resources (17.5 percent). By the Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose (COICOP), foodstuffs and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for 42 percent of the home consumption in the first quarter. A relatively large share of the spending is related to household bills - water, electricity, heating, natural gas, fuels - as well as spending on furniture and home maintenance, to which the Romanians allotted 22.4 percent of the consumption expenditure in Q1. The bulk of the home-related spending (18.6 percent) was incurred by the payment of utility bills. At the opposite end there was the households' spending on hotels, coffee shops and restaurants (1.2 percent) and for education (0.7 percent).
